Ben Pagano

Ben Pagano is a NYC-based songwriter, vocalist, keyboardist, and producer who has been writing and releasing music for the past 15 years. It was around 2010 while studying theater when he stumbled upon Sidewalk Cafe in the Lower East Side and quickly immersed himself in the legendary antifolk scene, where he would perform his then off-the-wall and energetic theatrical performances. He eventually formed a band, The Space Machine, performing regularly in the Brooklyn DIY music scene during the twilight of house venues and artist-centric run spaces. With the band, he released three albums: Robot Jazz (2014), Forms (2017), and Exploring Dreams (2022).

At the height of the pandemic, Pagano shifted his sound in a more solo direction, beginning to compose and produce music from home. The songs continued to grow in depth and musical and emotional complexity over time, forming his newest album, Drifting. It was recorded mostly in his living room and at Rad Hazard Studios in Brooklyn, NY, run by longtime friend, collaborator, and Space Machine guitarist Tom McCaffrey, over six years beginning in 2020.

In these songs there is a deep exploration of detachment and how one copes with intense emotions and catastrophic feelings, and eventually comes into their own. It is atmospheric and synth-heavy, with dreamy soundscapes that transport you to a beautiful world of self-reflection and colorful feelings. The sounds on this record have an intention to take the listener on a sonic journey that ebbs and flows.

“The album shows a creative blending of genres, and in places feels theatrical. It's a must-listen to and one of my favourites so far this year.”

- UpToHear

“Haunting synth-laden dreaminess and trickling guitar jangles form a nostalgic yearning amidst a slight percussive pitter-patter. Lyrics speaking of becoming “part of the machine,” and feeling nothing add to a sense of despair, uplifted with synth flourishes into the guitar-fronted rise. “

- Obscure Sound

“Pagano has created an album full of different sounds and different sonic experiments. This is not a straightforward singer/songwriter album. Imagine if Father John Misty fronted Pere Ubu, and that is kind of how this album hit this reviewer.”

- The Spill Magazine

“ 'Members Only' is this generations lost gem and we bet you’re glad you stumbled upon it. The playfulness and room for experimenting in Ben's voice is a true raw talent indeed. "

- Impose Magazine

"His solo compositions have a classic-rock vibe, propelled by a powerful tenor and fun, ironic lyrics."

The New Yorker

"..easy and free with a touch of soul and back-end funk that seems familiar, but with a fresh new-edge vibe. The lyrics are sung with a “don’t give a damn” attitude, but also with a pointed conviction"

- Pancakes and Whiskey

"Pagano’s soaring vocals and tender lyrics complete a very satisfying listening experience."
